a quickie insight into blackplanet and facebook history

BlackPlanet.com came first. It was launched in 1999, while Facebook was founded in 2004. 

• BlackPlanet: Founded in 1999 by Omar Wasow, it was one of the first major social networking sites and focused on the African-American community.
• Facebook: Founded as “thefacebook.com” in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg and his Harvard classmates, its membership was initially limited to university students. 

Black Planet was the leading social media network when I was at the Cincinnati Herald studying black culture and writing for a black newspaper and I remember thinking blacks were better suited for the future online than white people because they had better social media skills because they were one of the first in social media we could have had a black planet
